Example of Distillation

There is large scale use of separation techniques (e.g distillation, fractional distillation) in practical use. Some examples that you may read of is the making of perfumes using distillation, the using of fractional distillation in crude oil and air and obtaining pure water from seawater using distillation.

Distilling Lavender
Lavender is a flowering plant from the Lavandula genus of the mint family. Between 25 and 30 species are native to the Mediterranean region, tropical Africa and southeast India. However, lavender is commonly cultivated in gardens and may be found growing wild throughout the world. It is also grown commercially and its essential oil is extracted primarily for use in perfumes and potpourris.

The reason why distillation is used is because this method is able to easily extract the oil in lavenders for commercial uses.
